Jonathan looked out the window of the office he’d set up at the house as a patrol car drove by slowly. He was sure Tres had requested the department keep a closer watch on the house with more frequent patrols. He was just as certain the department couldn’t afford twenty-four hour surveillance. It helped just knowing that if he called, a patrol car would be dispatched immediately.

Unable to talk himself into returning to the security office, he worked from home the rest of the day. It had been difficult to focus on work, but he needed to finalize a marketing campaign before the end of the day. Knowing he would need to present a strong financial picture if the custody case went to court, he wanted to make sure Master Security was pulling in all the work it could.

He was about to close out when a new email popped up. It was from Dos in Florida.

“Hey Cuatro. The campaign looks great. I like the changes you made for the two different offices. Ace and Tres?”

Jonathan grinned at the use of his nickname. The Masters’ brothers did consider him a member of the family.

“They haven’t seen the final version yet. Ace is in court and Tres is taking care of a problem for me,” he typed before hitting send. A few seconds later, his phone rang.

“What problem?”

“Good to hear your voice, too, Dos,” Jonathan said avoiding the issue.

“Yeah, you too, now spill.”

Jonathan knew he was out of his league trying to argue. All three of the brothers had serious protective issues. What with Dos a retired Army Major, Tres a detective on the local police force, and Ace an ADA, trying to keep something from them was a waste of time.

“How long have you got?” Jonathan asked scrubbing a hand over his face and leaning back in his chair.

“As long as you need, little brother.”

Pinching the bridge of his nose, Jonathan fought the emotions the support brought up. It was great to have people to lean on, that wasn’t the problem. The problem was the fact that he needed to lean on them. He hated it, but knew he needed to talk about it if he was ever going to move on with his life.

“I’m being sued for custody of the twins.”

“What? Why?”

Jonathan sighed before responding. “Because, Mary was having an affair.”

“What?” Dos’ shocked tone reverberated through the phone.

“I know you find it hard to believe, but it’s true. To be honest, I’m not that surprised. There was a lot more to her than any of you knew. I knew we had some problems, in fact, I was seriously thinking about a divorce when she announced she was pregnant with the twins. The real kicker is, I didn’t even know about the affair until a month before the twins were born. God, it was such a mess.”

“Jon, the twins are almost eight months old. Why didn’t we know about this sooner? We would have helped.”

“Probably for the same reason you didn’t ask for help when you needed it,” Jonathan said and heard a loud sigh across the phone.
